DIY: Seance Candle

Welcome to the first of The Colon's DIY tutorials and our very first Spooky Saturday!

If you're like me, you want to have an authentic Halloween season, so you've come to the right place! This post will show you step by step how to make a candle for summoning the spirits of the dead. What better way to get in the Halloween spirit?

First, you'll select a jar to put the candle in. I like antique-looking mason jars, but you can really get creative here. Feel free to decorate it however you like!

Next you'll pick the wax. This can be as simple as taking the wax from a regular candle, choosing crayons for fun seance colors, or melting part of a wax sculpture of the deceased person you want to contact. For this one, I'm going to melt black crayons for an extra spooky effect.

(As a side note, I tried to take pictures of the process, but that seems to have fried my camera, weirdly, so I had to make do with some stock photos. Sorry!)

You'll also need to select a wick for the candle. I find it works best to use something that belonged to the target of the seance, such as a scrap of clothing or some strands of the person's hair. Tie one end to a pencil or something that can lay across the top of the jar, and let the other end hang down into the jar. If you need to weigh it down with some kind of trinket to keep the wick centered, go ahead!

Now that the wick and jar are ready, melt the wax in a pot on the stove. Every seance is different, so I'll just share what's worked for me: add one drop of blood from each of seance participants to the melted wax along with some essential oil(s) of your choice (I like cinnamon because it smells like fall!). Once that's all mixed, pour into the jar and let set in the moonlight for one night.

When the wax is solid, trim the wick, remove the pencil, and you're ready for a festive seance! See you next Saturday for another fun fall project!
