Make Your Own Halloween Costume!

Welcome back! Can you believe October is almost over? Good thing it's just the start of all our fun holiday DIY projects!

For our last Spooky Saturday, I'm going to walk you through the steps of making your own Halloween costume. DIY is about impressing people above all else, and making your costume instead of buying it is just another chance to rub it in people's faces that you have more skills.

First, pick a costume idea. I like to be a specific character. Anybody can go as "a cowboy," but it shows true craftiness and showmanship to go as Doc Brown from Back to The Future 3. If you want to be a more generalized character, like a ghost or mermaid, I won't judge you too harshly, but I recommend taking an original approach to those old favorites.

Now that you have your idea, start finding your costume components, around the house and at thrift/craft stores. Anybody can just buy a tacky costume at the Halloween store, but you're in the business of making something great. And definitely don't settle for something less than perfect. If you have to visit three different stores to find the right fabric for your headpiece, so be it. I won't have my pupils looking mediocre in those dimly lit parties and Snapchat selfies.

Once you've collected all the parts, get to making! A really good DIY costume takes 20-40 hours of sewing, gluing, painting, sculpting, and whatever else, so I hope you didn't make other plans this weekend!

So the costume's ready! Put everything on, including any makeup and hair products, and get out there to strut your stuff!

Let me know how it goes, folks, and I'll see you next month!
