Waste Basket Designer Nails It Again

LOUISVILLE, KY—Renowned waste basket designer Becky Fawson has released her 2020 line of designs, once again proving that in this business, you either have the muse or you don't.

Fawson's highly-anticipated new catalogue of 10 waste basket models comes after a 3-year hiatus that the designer took following her release of the ever-popular plain-white-square-opening-with-round-bottom waste basket that took the market by storm in 2016. She disappeared from the fast-paced waste basket design scene and became a recluse, as she wrestled with what she calls both her "gift and curse" of mind-boggling waste basket ideas.

Although few know exactly what she did during those years, all waste basket enthusiasts the world over are thrilled over these 10 designs, calling them everything from "shocking," and "divine," to "risque," and "fiendishly wicked."

When asked about how her muse communicates with her, Fawson said, "I like to take a radically different approach than most, I feel. I look around the room, or wherever else I am, and I look for objects that have openings on them. And these are not just the other waste baskets, mind you. I like to look even at a cup or a mug, and sometimes even a laundry hamper or what-have-you. I look at that, and I think, 'Does that make me want to throw my rubbish in it?' If the answer is 'no,' then I think of it in a different color or maybe change the shape just a little until the waste basket in my head makes me want to throw away my rubbish in it."

Already, Fawson's 2020 line has received 6 nominations for "Wasties," the highest honor within the waste basket design industry. The nominations include "Best design for distance tossing," "Purplest design," and "Best use of nostalgia." She already holds 2 Wasties from past wins.

For those eager to get their hands on the latest Fawsons, they'll need to get in line. Tickets to the showcase in November are nearing $200 per person for the floor, and each handcrafted waste basket takes between 2 and 4 months to complete, meaning that many of the thousands of orders will not be fulfilled until 2022. Still, Fawson says that the volume of orders has caused her website to crash 3 times in the first 24 hours after releasing the catalogue, so we're likely to see these waste baskets in the bathrooms of the likes of Hollywood's elite and the nicest suites of Vegas's best casinos.

Regarding what is next for Fawson, she said, "Well, I like to think of myself as a waste basket. I just sit and wait for my muse to toss its work into my head, as long as I remain open to it."
